The Breath In Poetry Collective is a proud supporter of the Unveiling Africa Foundation

What is the Unveiling Africa Foundation?

The Unveiling Africa Foundation (UVA) is a youth led non-profit organization founded in 2006.

What does UVA do?

UVA’s mission is to contribute to the development of the African continent by harnessing the intellectual capital of Africans in the Diaspora while enhancing the educational experience and social development of the African child.

How do they do it?

Unveiling Africa’s work on the African continent has begun with a pilot project in Nigeria. Our core focus is to supplement youth education by promoting critical thinking and community activism amongst Nigeria’s secondary school students. UVA hopes to achieve this with the following initiatives

Step 1: Annual Essay Contest

Step 2: Annual Nigerian Teenager’s Conference

Step 3: Establish School Clubs

Step 4: Educational Magazines and TV Programming for Teenagers

In 2010 the first Essay Contest and Teenager’s Conference was held in Lagos, Nigeria. UVA received over 200 essay submissions from Junior and Secondary Schools across Nigeria. The top 3 students from the contest were announced at the Teenager’s Conference to over 600 attendees. Contest winners received over $3,000 in scholarships. 2010 also saw the launch of Pacesetters a teenagers magazine, distributed to over 2000 teens across Nigeria, Ghana, and the United Kingdom.

Come out on Tuesday, April 26th @9pm to find out how you too can become a part of the movement.

Refugee Rights – Rouge Poetry – TONIGHT

Hey Poetry Lovers,Its TUESDAY!! We’ve got another special night for you. In collaboration with WUSC (World University Services of Canada) we bring you a night of poetry
This event is to help celebrate Refugee Rights Day on April 4th which marks the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 1985 Singh decision. In this decision the Supreme Court found that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects the fundamental rights of refugees. The Court decided that ‘everyone’ includes refugee claimants in the sentence: ‘Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.’
Please bring a friend! Bring a poem you wrote! Bring a poem you love!

See you all tonight!
