Rising Youth/Rising Poets Poetry Slam

In collaboration with the City of Edmonton, The Breath in Poetry Collective held its first ever youth poetry slam. It was was well attended and the youth did not disappoint. It is proof that the youth have talent and just need an avenue to express themselves. We at the Breath In Poetry collective support youth arts and we will continue to foster and support their talent in the coming years.

There were four amazingly talented youth who participated in the Slam. Aisha Ali, Abdulhakim Elmi, Khadija Mohamed and Hanan Ali.
All great poets. They brought high energy, great wordplay and wonderful content. It makes me think, what was I doing at their age? Not well written poetry, that is for sure. Kudos to them. The competition eventually ended with one youth successfully taking first place, however, It should be stated, that they were all great and all of them have made the members of the Breath in Poetry collective members extremely proud.

Aisha Ali succceded in taking first place.
Abdulhakim Elmi came in second
Hanan Ali in third
Khadija Mohamed in fourth

Aisha Ali has earned a paid opportunity to perform in the Edmonton Poetry festival’s Africa night amongst well known poets. She also earned the opportunity to become published. A well deserved opportunity for a youth who strives for excellence.

Abdulhakim, Hanan and Khadija will also become published in the months to follow.

Because there was a demand, we are in the works of creating a monthly youth Slam competition in the weeks to come. It will be called “Rising Poets” . If you know youth who are interested in competing poetically, don’t hesitate to e-mail us at Breathinpoetry@gmail.com

Thank you to all those who came out to support the youth. Special thanks to the City of Edmonton’s Rising youth Program for providing the resources to hold the event.

Stay Blessed
